The Merchant of Venice Character Analysis Rough Draft

“The Merchant of Venice” written by William Shakespeare revolves around many different characters with their own problems that are mentioned throughout the story. The character Antonio makes a deal with a Jew named Shylock, and Antonio, being a Christian, made it a lot harder be the two characters to come to an agreement without some sort of a twist. The story continues on with many different people, but a character that seems to stand out with a personality like no other would be Portia. The character Portia in this story is said to be a very selfish, self-centered, and an egotistical type of person. But, what many people may not see is the other side to Portia that protects the ones she loves and does anything and everything in order for those around her to be safe and to be problem free.
The part of the story where Portia is introduced is when she was talking about how she was forced to choose a husband due to the death of her father. “O me, the words choose! I may neither choose whom I would refuse whom I dislike. Is it not hard, that I cannot choose one, nor refuse one” (Act 1 Scene 2 Lines 20-23) Portia, having no other choice but to marry a guy on a list shows that the way she acts can only be a way of telling that she is trying to do what’s best for herself. “But love is blind and lovers cannot see / for if they could, cupid himself would blush” (Act 2 Scene 6 Lines 36-38) Portia has shown a sense where she is very specific when it comes to who she wants to marry and fall in love with, but having to do with that, she is only trying her best to chose the right person to be with.
As the story progresses, so does Portia’s development as well. “Appearances can be deceptive / the world is always taken by torment” (Act 3 Scene 2 Lines 73-74) Bassanio tells Portia as he picks the right box in order to marry Portia, and of course Portia is pleased with Bassanio because he is the only decent guy she’s seen. “For as thou urgest justice, be assured / Thou shalt have justice more than thou desires” (Act 4 Scene 1 Lines 313-314) An example where Portia is doing her best to try and protect her husband’s friend that she clearly has not met before says a lot about her character and how she took the time to help defend Antonio.
The story finally ends with Portia helping out in a trial dressed up as a man to help defend Antonio. But then her marriage is also something she has tested along the way by asking for Bassanio’s ring while she was still in disguise. “Let me give light, but let me not be light / for a light wife doth make a heavy husband” (Act 5 Scene 1 Lines (128-130) She states that the more she, as a wife, has to also be as independent as a husband. “Sir you are welcome to our house / It must appear in other ways than words / Therefore I scant this breathing courtesy” (Act 5 Scene 1 Lines 138-140) Portia at this point is showing that she can be a generous person when it comes to the people she cares about.

The character development of Portia also shows throughout the story as well as her personality. Portia has taught the readers that it’s sometimes okay to do what you want as long as it benefits you and doesn’t harm those around you. The character Portia in the book The Merchant of Venice is assumed to be a greedy and selfish individual but instead is misunderstood when in reality she does what she wants with good intentions. The author of this play portrays many different perspectives for the readers to actually understand the position each character is in and the problems they face throughout the story.

Merchant of Venice Pre-Reading Work

1.     Don’t rely on outward appearances when making judgment – agree
·      I agree because people come in all different shapes, sizes, and looks yet one’s personality isn’t determined by their appearance.
·      Many people around the world today have a specific idea of what the people they want to get to know, to have the perfect image, which is why society today is corrupted with the many judgmental people.
·      I most of the time judge people by the way they look, as a first impression, but as time goes on I feel I get to know the person, and enjoy their personality.
2.     Justice is always blind – Agree
·      Power can influence many people
·      The world today has different perspectives of what the “right” thing to do is
·      I am a person that rather leads than follows but if I were to follow then I would think that the leader is wrong, but if I were the leader then I would think im right, so leadership or justice is blind.
3.     A brotherly love between two friends can be just as strong as an intimate love between a man and a woman -Agree
·      People may not notice but there is actually a lot of people that think a friendship is just as important as a relationship
·      Others really enjoy the company of friendship just as much as being in a relationship
·      I can't say I have personal experience with this but I feel that I would be the type to defiantly believe that one’s friendship can be as strong.
4.     You can break a promise but as long as you have a good excuse- Agree
·      If the excuse is actually worthy enough then its possible someone wouldn’t mind breaking a promise
·      People may just be more understanding than others
·      I’ve had many people break their promises, which kind of led me to get use to it, so as of right now when people make promises I try my best to not except so much from people.
5.     Love is blind -Agree
·      Love is blind because many people try to do certain things for their “lover” not noticing.
·      Some people do so much for the person they like, they start to act a certain way that is not how this person usually acts.
·      People around me that they say they are in love usually is all over their “lover” so they act a different way.
6.     Stereotypes are often right- Disagree
·      This is basically that same thing as judging a book by its cover
·      Stereotypes are very fictional and the more people spread a certain “type” of person, the more classified it would be as a stereotype
·      I am Asian and wear glasses, so people think im like really smart, but in reality im not that smart (hahaha)
7.     An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is a good motto to live by. – Disagree
·      I disagree because you cant really hold something against someone because problems that people seek revenge for is basically a waste of someone’s time.
·      Some people have the ability to be the better person and just walk away from an issue like this
·      I’m not the type of person to be the to fight back, but instead to walk away knowing I’m the better person. But if it’s serious then I would obviously I would.

1 .I have had time where being sad is just a thing that I feel just at random. I cant say im incredibly sad but I think its just like puberty or something. When im sad I usually think to myself that this feeling isn’t permanent, which gives me hope that I can reach true happiness.
2. The attitudes today have changed in many ways due to the fact people don’t really mind unless they get something in return. As of right now, I know that many people are greedy with their money and those are the type of people that usually have no friends, but as for the people that do lend money and get paid back, are usually those who have a better chance of being considered as a good person.

3. I really wouldn’t let people take a large amount of money, but if I were to lend someone money they would have to pay me back, if not then I would get mad of course and also my trust in this person gets lost. But other than that the money I lend someone must be returned to me.

4. I wouldn’t really expect them to blend considering the fact that people have different views on religion and ethnic ways. In this story I think it will all bend in the end but will take a while for it to work out.

Metaphoric Poem: Final

As the sun sets,
my eyes begin to open
I am able to see the glistening moon shine
I am able to hear the animals howl
Noticing my surroundings all humble and quiet
Observing is my gift
For I am an owl

I face many problems throughout my life.
But to me these are obstacles
They are just my preys.
I see them from my left
and I see them from my right
Not making them know Im there
Because they are in fact,
my kill of the night.

I am an explorer
But as much I would love to see the world
And all that it has to offer for a small one like me
I stay in my little old tree
where the feeling of security and protection for myself
is one of my top priorities
When will I realize the many capabilities?
Maybe soon will i surely know the endless possibilities

I can be smart and an advanced animal
capable of so many things.
Yet seem to be never satisfied,
with the knowledge I am given
with the things I see
and with the things I feel
But what can I say
These are the aspects
that make me truly real

I am quite a different animal
As you can tell many may not notice me
during the day or the night
but that does not make me any less special
Unlike most creatures
I am an old soul
and praised for that and the many other gifts I carry
My appearance can trick you into thinking Im weak and innocent
But with a high and complex brain of mine,
My potential and skills are exceedingly infinite

A symbol of wisdom
i am said to be
But not knowing anything
and not being the greatest size
are just a few weaknesses from me
I was taught to hide them in my mind
Leaving me to be peaceful quiet and kind

There is that side of me
that makes me want to hide
but then there are the ones I love.
With them I feel the sense of pride
that fill me with happiness and glee
confident comfortable and completely free

I am an owl
A silent killer to the problems in my way
Yet I am the the helper above your tree
Observing those that I feel is in need
And still trying to be the best version
that I could possibly be
